We get it. You are trusting us with sensitive information about your life. We take that seriously. This page explains, in plain English, exactly what we do with your data and how we keep it safe.

Who we are
Litigant Ltd (company number 17190124, registered office 124-128 City Road, London, EC1V 2NX) is the data controller for personal information collected through litigant.org.uk.
ICO registration: pending.
What we collect
When you create an account, we store your email address and a securely hashed password. We never store your password in plain text.
When you use our tools, we store the information you give us so it is there when you come back. This includes things like your timetable events, uploaded documents, and conversation history.
We use Vercel Analytics to understand how people use the site. This collects anonymous, aggregated data like page views and device type. It does not track you personally or use cookies.
We do not buy, sell, or share your personal data with third parties for marketing. Ever.
Onboarding and anonymised statistics
When you sign up we ask a few short, optional questions: what kind of situation brings you here, how you are handling the legal side, a rough household income band, the first half of your postcode, and how you found us. Every question is skippable. You can answer "prefer not to say" to any of them.
We ask for income band and the first half of your postcode because one of our core missions is to make the case for better access to justice. Those two fields let us show, in aggregate, where the gaps are. We never collect your full postcode, and we never link these fields to your name or email in anything we publish.
The statistics we share externally are always aggregated and anonymised: "X% of Litigant users in the North West report household income under £20,000", never "James at SW1A2AA earns under £20,000". Aggregated figures may be used in reports, policy submissions, and public advocacy for legal-aid reform.
Sharing this data is opt-in. When you finish onboarding we ask you to tick a box to confirm you are happy for anonymised usage data to be used this way. You can change your mind at any time from your account settings.
We have completed a data protection impact assessment (DPIA) covering the income and postcode fields. If you want a copy, email us.
How we use AI
Several of our tools are powered by AI models (from Anthropic and OpenAI). When you use these tools, the information you provide is sent to these services to generate your results.
We only send what is needed for the specific tool you are using. We do not send your entire account history or personal details unnecessarily.
AI providers process your data according to their own privacy policies. We have chosen providers that do not use customer inputs to train their models.
AI can make mistakes. Our tools provide procedural guidance, not legal advice. Always check important details with a qualified solicitor or Citizens Advice.
How we protect your data
Your data is stored securely using Supabase, which encrypts data at rest and in transit. All connections to our site use HTTPS.
Passwords are hashed using industry-standard algorithms. We cannot see your password, and neither can anyone else.
We do not store payment card details on our servers. All payments are processed securely by Stripe.
You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from your dashboard settings.
Your rights
You have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data at any time. You can do most of this yourself from your account settings.
If you want a full copy of everything we hold about you, or if you want us to delete it all, email us and we will respond within 30 days.
We are based in England and comply with UK data protection law (UK GDPR). If you believe we have handled your data incorrectly, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
We will update this page if anything changes. The date at the top tells you when it was last revised.
